A builder adds water to a substance (X) to prepare the material used for whitewashing.
- Identify (X) and give its chemical formula.
- Write the equation for its reaction with water.
Solution to Question 1901
Complete working(i) The substance used to prepare the whitewashing solution is quicklime, or calcium oxide. Its formula is \(\ce{CaO}\).
(ii) Calcium oxide combines vigorously with water to form calcium hydroxide (slaked lime), releasing heat:
The solution of calcium hydroxide is applied to walls for whitewashing.
‘X’ is calcium oxide (quicklime), \(\ce{CaO}\). Its reaction is \(\ce{CaO(s) + H2O(l) -> Ca(OH)2(aq) + heat}\).
