Write condensed structural formulae for (i) ethanoic acid(ii) a bromopentane(iii) butanone(iv) hexanal. Also state whether bromopentane has structural isomers.
Solution to Question 301
Complete working- Ethanoic acid: \(\ce{CH3-COOH}\)
- 1-bromopentane: \(\ce{CH3-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2Br}\)
- Butan-2-one: \(\ce{CH3-CO-CH2-CH3}\)
- Hexanal: \(\ce{CH3-(CH2)4-CHO}\)
Bromopentane has structural isomers because bromine can occupy different positions and the five-carbon skeleton may be straight or branched.
The four structures are shown above; bromopentane does have structural isomers.
